CALF News has been a premier cattle industry magazine for more than 55 years. In 2004, Betty Jo Gigot took over as publisher and needed a magazine publishing company to carry on the long legacy of high-quality design, layout and production. It was not only important to have a magazine publishing company that could provide custom publishing services, but also serve as a publishing consultant to evaluate and manage printing costs; streamline the magazine production process; move CALF into digital magazine publishing; create and maintain a CALF website; and create and manage the publication’s inbound and outbound marketing. This wish list would enable Ms. Gigot to focus on what she loves and does best – create and publish unique, relevant content.
While BluePrint had been involved with CALF as the layout designer, the new role of full publication production has presented a host of new responsibilities over the years. We worked with Ms. Gigot to assist her in evaluating industry trends, needs and opportunities, and listened as she conveyed her goals to our team. She has always had an extraordinarily strong commitment to quality content in an attractive package, but also wanted to reach a larger audience and remain a viable publication – all at a time when many print publications struggled. She also wanted to grow into the digital age and have a website that would complement the print magazine.
Our custom magazine publishing services are tailored to each client. For CALF, our step-by-step process begins with an annual review and creation of an editorial calendar, media guide and annual production schedule. Production of each issue involves a structured and systematic creation and review of editorial, graphics, images, advertisements and other materials and content. Weekly review meetings keep people and schedules on track and deadlines met.
Our proofing and review process ensures that each piece of content is seen by numerous sets of eyes so that nothing gets missed. Our copy editor reviews each issue, word-by-word, multiple times, and instills a level of excellence that only comes through years of experience and industry knowledge. Utilizing our printer’s online proofing system is critical to ensuring that the final product meets or exceeds our clients’ expectations. Our data manager keeps track of circulation and coordinates each issue’s distribution with the printer so that readers receive the magazine in a timely manner.
BluePrint was also integral in moving CALF into the digital age, producing an interactive, HTML-5 digital, flip-book version of each issue for distribution on social media, via eblasts and hosted on the CalfNews.net website.
Through continual collaboration with Betty Jo, BluePrint has brought new ideas, innovations and processes to the custom magazine publishing service we provide for CALF. We meet bi-annually to review goals, progress and to discuss and implement new ideas to help CALF improve, grow and expand.
